Before her role as a national spokesperson, she was active in student politics with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and was elected as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union in 2008. In 2015, she unsuccessfully contested the Delhi Assembly election against Arvind Kejriwal. Sharma became the center of a major controversy following her remarks about the Prophet Muhammad and his wife, Aisha, during a television debate. Her comments were widely condemned as derogatory and led to significant national and international backlash.
